Historically Speaking...
In 1823, the French Count Philippe Odet brought grapefruit from the West Indies to Florida, planting the first grove near Tampa.1
In 1885, Florida's first shipment of grapefruits to New York and Philadelphia created a flurry of interest in the fruit and was the beginning of a serious commercial grapefruit industry.2
Grapefruit is believed to be a hybrid of the pomelo with the sweet orange. The grapefruit now has the scientific name Citrus X paradise.3
Grapefruit growers from Florida's Indian River region became part of the Ocean Spray cooperative in 1976 when the company expanded its membership beyond cranberry growers to include grapefruit growers.
